How to Get More Plays on SoundCloud (Without Buying Them)

Why most artists' SoundCloud plays stall

Most artists upload, post the link in two group chats, and watch the play counter sit at 200 for a week. That's not a SoundCloud problem, it's a velocity problem. The platform rewards tracks that get fast engagement in the first 48 hours: reposts, likes, comments, and full-track plays. Without that signal, the algorithm has no reason to keep showing your track to new listeners. The free playbook is about manufacturing that early velocity through real channels.

Prep the track before you upload

    1. 01Upload at the highest quality your distributor allows. Compressed audio loses listeners in the first 10 seconds.
    2. 02Write a real title and description. Include the genre, mood, and 2-3 keywords artists would search for ('melodic house', 'jersey club', 'dnb edit').
    3. 03Add genre and mood tags accurately. SoundCloud uses these for related-track recommendations.
    4. 04Use 1:1 high-resolution artwork. Pixelated artwork tanks click-through on the discovery feed.
    5. 05Set the release date correctly so the track lands in your followers' streams at the right time.

    Free repost groups and exchanges

Free repost groups are private communities where artists swap reposts with each other. The Artist Influence Hub is one example; there are dozens of others on Discord, Telegram, and Facebook. The trade is simple: you repost a curated track once a day, and other members repost yours. Real members, real followers, no money. The downside is the slow build (you need 4-8 weeks of activity to see meaningful return), and the time cost. The upside is permanent reach you'll have for every release going forward.

Direct outreach to DJs and curators

    • Build a list of 30-50 DJs, label A&Rs, and curators in your specific subgenre. Use SoundCloud search, Spotify playlist editors, and Instagram bios to find them.
    • Pitch with a short email or DM: one sentence on the track, one sentence on why it fits their taste, a private SoundCloud link. No attachments.
    • Don't ask for a repost in the first message. Ask if they'd give it a listen. People who like it will repost on their own.
    • Follow up once after 5-7 days. Don't follow up a third time.
    • Track responses in a simple sheet. The ones who reply once usually reply forever once they like your sound.

    Engagement loops that compound

    • Comment on tracks from artists at your level or slightly above. Real comments with real takes, not 'fire'. They check your profile and often follow back.
    • Repost tracks you genuinely love from your own followers. They notice. Many will repost yours next release.
    • Reply to every comment on your tracks within the first 48 hours. Comment activity is a strong algorithmic signal.
    • Post Stories on Instagram with native SoundCloud links so your existing audience pushes plays.
    • Cross-post a 15-second preview to TikTok and Instagram Reels with 'full song on SoundCloud' in the caption.

    Upload timing

SoundCloud's stream feed is chronological for followers, so timing matters. For most US-based artists, Thursday or Friday between 11am-2pm ET is the strongest window: people are checking new music going into the weekend. For European audiences, late afternoon UTC. Don't upload at 3am when nobody's looking. The first 6 hours of stream visibility determine whether the track gets reposted into other people's feeds.

When free runs out of road

Free tactics work and they compound. They also have a ceiling. Most artists who break out of the 1,000-play range either spend years building a real audience or pair the free work with a paid repost campaign that opens up curator pages they couldn't reach on their own. See our SoundCloud Reposts service for how paid network campaigns work and what the realistic budget range looks like.
